FAQ’s

The first session is 60-75 minutes and will be held in an enclosed area. Our therapists will arrange for you to sign the consent form before the session begins. After that, we will listen to the challenges and struggles faced by you and/or your child. Our therapists will then identify the underlying issues, propose and administer relevant screening tests, followed by setting mutual goals and sharing subsequent session treatment plans.

The session starts with the casual conversation with our Therapist to get to know about you and/or your child’s current situation, current symptoms, life history and your parenting challenges individually. It is held in a relax and safe environment. We strictly adhere to The Code of Professional Ethics to ensure all information shared during the session are deemed private and confidential.

Our Therapist will then proceed to explore the challenges you and/or your child are facing and the silent struggles he/she is experiencing. This is followed by our Therapist screening the situation with you and/or your child individually to identify underlying issues that cause you and/or your child’s emotional, behavioural and or social concerns.

We will make recommendations and suggestions on subsequent session plans, treatment plans and parenting support to meet your goal.  It is important to know that therapy is a process that takes time to reap the full benefit. Therefore, giving your child the space they need and allow them to work at their own pace is essential.

At the end of the first session, you will be able to get a better understanding on why you and/or your child behaves and reacts in a way that you and/or your child do.

All our therapists have years of related therapeutic experience and are trained with our Counselling Approach: Child-led therapy, Family-Focused and Strength-Based to achieve “I’m OK Child, You’re OK Parent”.

Parents seek counselling for their child or themselves as they recognise the need to have someone walking through the journey together with them on their parenting challenge.

Parents often feel stuck and face dilemma with child’s negative behaviour such as temper tantrums, interrupting others, impulsiveness with little regard for safety or consequences, aggressiveness or other socially inappropriate acts. They also find difficulty in handling their child’s negative emotions such as being emotionally down, sad and depressed, loss of direction, confused, and/or over dependent on social media or gaming to get through the day.

If you have already tried everything possible, why not give us a chance too? Our Experience Therapist will walk through the parenting journey with you, seeing positive changes in your child’s emotional well-being, behavioural wellbeing, social wellbeing and school wellbeing.

We prioritize the emotional well-being of parents to sustain romantic relationships after becoming parents, fostering resilience and strengthening the couple's bond amidst the joys and challenges of raising children

We also prioritize the emotional well-being of educators who support children both in and outside the classroom. Your well-being is crucial in minimizing the impact on children and enhancing the effectiveness of your teaching.

Other parents who share their experiences and solutions with the parents who face the same parenting challenges often find the approach works for one child but not for the other. They both apply the same parenting style but the outcomes are different. Why? This is because every child’s underlying issues and circumstances are different. The effective outcome requires fundamental change or the same problems will likely to reoccur again. Therefore it is crucial to engage professional help to actively find the root cause and facilitate change.

Parental Beliefs, Perceptions, and Expectations might influence the way of communication and affect parent-child relationship.

The counselling process is designed to walk through a journey with both you and your child, to explore and uncover underlying issues. Through counseling, both of you can gain insight, develop coping strategies, and work towards resolving challenges effectively. Here are some ways in which counseling can help improve emotional well-being, behavior, social skills, academic performance, and overall quality of life:

  • Emotional Well-being
  • Behavior
  • Social Skills
  • Academic Performance
  • Overall Quality of Life

In summary, counseling offers a holistic approach to improving well-being, addressing individual and family needs, and promoting positive growth and development across various domains of life. Through the counseling process, both you and your child can experience positive changes that extend beyond the therapy sessions and contribute to a healthier and happier life.

Our company, HiDolphin, provides a safe and fun environment for you and/or your child, without bias or judgemental. Our Therapist regularly practice active listening while leveraging professional skills to develop a positive and healthy interaction with you and your child.

Our therapists provide guidance and direction to you and your child through Child-led therapy, Family-Focused, and Strength-Based for effective change. They also provide tools and techniques that will help your child to be self-therapist in their life journey so they are able to head into right direction and find right resources along the way.

To gain most benefits out of the session, we strongly encourage you to actively involve in the counseling process as you could offer valuable insights that will contribute to your child’s overall well-being.

Choosing the right therapy method for you and your child depends on various factors, including the specific issues you and/or your child facing, preferences, and the expertise of the therapist. Therapy methods we used with children, youth, family and educator are Play Therapy by using Sand, Art and Music, Multichannel Eye Movement Integration (MEMI),  Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Gottman Method Couples Therapy.

Our Therapists use these different approaches cater to the unique needs of you and/or your child and are administered in a safe environment for both of you to express yourself and develop coping strategies.

Ultimately, the suitability of method is determined through the screening by therapist who evaluates your and/or your child’s needs and proposes the most appropriate therapeutic approach, as well as your own preferences and comfort level.

Additionally, don't hesitate to ask questions and discuss any concerns you and/or your child may have with the therapist to ensure that you and/or your child feel comfortable and confident in the therapy process.

No. There will be no official medical record trace link to you and/or your child from attending counselling sessions.

Counsellor’s professional code of ethics guides our Therapists in matters of handling clients’ confidentiality and the release of clients’ information. We also adhere to Singapore’s Personal Data Protection Act guidelines. Information obtained in counselling sessions will not be disclosed to outside parties with the following exceptions:

  1. You provide written permission to our Therapist to do so, and/or
  2. You and/or Your child is having suicidal thoughts, thinking to commit self-harm or harm others. If our therapist assesses such threat to be serious, he/she is obligated to take necessary actions to protect your and/or your child and/or others including reporting the case to relevant authorities.
  3. You and/or your legally recognized representative may also waive the right of privacy.
  4. In a family therapy, confidentiality privileges do not apply among family members. The therapist will use his/her clinical judgement when revealing such information. Nonetheless, confidential information will not be released to outside parties unless the therapist is authorised to do so.
  5. If your child is under the age of 21 and experiencing abuse, the law requires abuse of minors to be reported to the relevant authorities.

In situations (2)-(5), our Therapist will make every effort possible to inform you of the situation prior to any information disclosure. Your work with our Therapist will be managed in a competent manner and consistent with accepted ethical standards.

One of the reasons is due to the perception of what counselling entails. Children may perceive themselves as a bad, naughty or problematic child if they attend counselling sessions and get therapy treatment. The truth about counselling is that it aims to advocate your child’s best interest and not about persuading him/her to change.

They might also often ask “why me?” and not parents or siblings. It is important to acknowledge your child is not a “problem to be fixed” in the family. The problem is not your child but the issues he/she is struggling with. HiDolphin is a fun and safe place to help your child overcome problems that hinder him/her from leading a happy childhood.

HiDolphin aims to help your child gain back his/her happiness. You and your child are here to explore and work together to solve their current issues with help from Child Therapy approaches.

You can say something like this, “We know it is not easy for you to face [the issue]? Mummy/Daddy wants to learn techniques on how to help you. We get to know someone who helps children and parents, and we think you will really like them when you meet them. The visit is special because you can talk about anything you want including us! and it stays secret. If you do not like it, they could stop anytime.”

Remember, how you say it is more important than what you say. Your approach to convince the child to attend the session should be the approach to collaborate instead of command.

Yes you can.

Some parents choose to explore and understand first what a counselling session entails then go back and share the information with their child before bringing them in. They may have some private questions to clarify with the therapist before committing to the therapy.

Other parents may have challenges bringing their child in the first session. If this is the case, it is most advisable for parents to take action first by coming for the first session without child. Our therapist will be able to provide parenting counselling support for you to work with your child at home. When your child is ready, you could then bring him/her to attend subsequent sessions together.

Parenting sessions can be incredibly beneficial for parents who are seeking support, guidance, and strategies to enhance their parenting skills and strengthen their relationship with their children.

After our Therapist completed the assessment during your first session, he/she will set initial goals of counselling and suggest the frequency and number of sessions required to achieve the goal. The number of sessions varies given each case is unique in its complexity,.

However, it's crucial to recognize that counseling is a process that requires time, commitment, and patience to achieve meaningful results. Every individual and family is unique, and the issues they face vary in complexity and scope. Therefore, having access to counseling sessions without limitations allows individuals and families to work through their concerns thoroughly and address them effectively.

By not limiting the number of counseling sessions, individuals and families can engage in in-depth exploration and problem-solving with their therapist over time. This approach enables them to delve into various issues, develop coping strategies, and make sustainable changes that promote long-term well-being and growth.
